The Love of God

_
The love of God is greater far
Than tongue or pen can ever tell;
It goes beyond the highest star,
And reaches to the lowest hell;
The guilty pair, bowed down with care,
God gave His Son to win;
His erring child He reconciled,
And pardoned from his sin.

Refrain:

Oh, love of God, how rich and pure!
How measureless and strong!
It shall forevermore endure—
The saints’ and angels’ song.

When hoary time shall pass away,
And earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,
When men who here refuse to pray,
On rocks and hills and mountains call,
God’s love so sure, shall still endure,
All measureless and strong;
Redeeming grace to Adam’s race—
The saints’ and angels’ song.

Could we with ink the ocean fill,
And were the skies of parchment made,
Were every stalk on earth a quill,
And every man a scribe by trade;
To write the love of God above
Would drain the ocean dry;
Nor could the scroll contain the whole,
Though stretched from sky to sky.

(The Love of God - Frederick M. Lehman, 1917)

Must be a sign of age when the songs of worship that have been most meaningful to me during my devotion times this Easter are all hymns at least 90 years old....:0

But the truth is that nothing quite compares to old hymns when it comes to the richness and poetic nature of their lyrics.

And as we come towards the end of the Easter celebrations and thanksgiving on this Resurrection Monday, I thought it most apt to give thanks once again for the love of God for all of us. I thought the 3rd and last stanza of this hymn described my thoughts of gratitude the most - indeed nothing that we ever do can hope to adequately describe or give thanks for the love of God, for each one of us.

Although Easter this year will soon be past, I pray that that sense of awe, gratitude and thanksgiving for the love of our Lord will forever linger in our hearts, all the days of our lives.

My theory is that we remember the songs of our youth. Haha, in the 1980s hymns figure pretty prominently in services.

I'm old too! :)
